For Chi

I wasn’t expecting you
Not at my doorstep
With your tired smile
Weary eyes
And broken fragments of our dreams cradled in your palms

I had since given your shoes to the Save Our Children Society
Given your clothes to my cousin going away to school
And sold your car for a small fortune

I had swapped our dreams for a steady reality
Our future for a job that pays well at Mr. Biggs
Our hopes for a place in which to rest my head

So, I wasn’t ever expecting you back
Because when you had said goodbye
I thought you had meant it
