What are we supposed to do?

The prophets did speak of it
And we had been warned
about wars and rumors of wars

Wars and their rumors
these days
come in the form of the Islamic State
of Boko Haram
of murderous terror cells

Ravaging
bombing
maiming
making children fatherless
Lovers loverless

It is all expected
But what if it had been my mother
in the Baga massacre of January
or my brother in Paris
or my best friend in Nairobi
or my colleague in Pakistan
or me in Yola?

Are we supposed to just sit here and wait to die;
in the name of 'signs of our times'
for the sake of 'last days'?
Are we supposed to just wait
till blood fills our gutters
till there are no cities left to bomb?

What are we supposed to do?
